PENZANCE JUBILEE BATHING POOL CEREMONY FRIDAY 7th JUNE 1935
Arrangements were complete for the opening of the Penzance Jubilee Bathing Pool which took place at three o'clock Friday 7th June 1935. The Bathing Pool was undoubtedly one the most important if not the most important scheme the Penzance Council has undertaken, from the point of view of an amenity to Penzance as a seaside and holiday resort, for many years past, and is fitting that the opening ceremony should be worthy of such an event.
The actual opening was performed by Ald J.W. Meek, J.P., to whose energy and unremitting; zeal the construction of the pool was no small measure due. He was supported by the Mayor, (Ald Charles Tregenza, J.P., C.A.), and members of the Council, who appeared in their robes.
An interesting programme of aquatic events had been arranged, and the first plunge into the officially opened pool was be taken by that grand old Penzance champion swimmer Prof Richard Hicks. There was a special demonstration by British Olympic representative of Los Angeles in 1932; high and fancy diving by Plymouth divers, fancy swimming, races for men, boys and girls, polo matches, etc. An event which proved to be the most popular one was the Beauty Parade of Bathing Belles.
Altogether it was a fine afternoon's sport provided, and spectator's were able to have a fine view of the events not only from inside the Pool, but along the terrace outside.
Thousands of people were attracted to Penzance, and, as Friday was early closing day (in those days) in Penzance, residents made it quite a public holiday. In order that the town may be presented as gay appearance as possible, the Mayor appealed to all residents to display all the flags, bunting and other decorations that they possessed.
