Councillors in Cornwall have thrown out plans for two new supermarkets in Wadebridge.
Morrisons had applied to build a store on training pitches owned by Wadebridge Town Football Club and then provide new facilities nearby.
Sainsbury's wanted to put a supermarket on council-owned land nearby at Higher Trenant.
Both applications were refused on the grounds that they would have an unacceptable impact on the town centre.
Planning officers had recommended to Cornwall Council that the Morrisons plan be refused and the Sainsbury's scheme be approved.
During a five-hour meeting, members of the council's planning committee did approve an application for an extension to the town's branch of Tesco.
