This old arch belonged to the original St Anthony's chapel on this site, or so I was told. It must, therefore, be one of Penzance's most ancient relics.
As far as I remember there were two ancient chapels here; one was to St Anthony which is supposed to have been near the Barbican, and another older one further around, both supposed to have given this rocky promontory the name of Pen Sans. There are other stones reused in the gardens, with ancient markings - door posts.
