It is, so. This section shows a couple of test modules for replacing the Promenade Railing. As well as discovering it was more complex in the 'new improved' material, it was found that it took so much ingenuity and effort to remove the old ones, it was not cost effective and would actually cause more damage to the stonework. So, it was left. There is an official report written that state 'the original railing' has lasted along the length of the promenade. The original railing was swept away by a storm. I reckon Ken Dodd writes their scripts.
Does anyone know what happened to the railings on the lower level of the Prom? I was wondering if they were removed to help the war effort - like so many other railings. I did read once that all these plus pots and pans etc that were collected to 'help build tanks, Spitfires' etc were never actually used - it was more of an exercise to make people believe they were helping the war effort - a sort of morale boost. I don't know how much truth is in that?

The majority of railing on the berms and steps were of the old design and was removed for safety, I do not have access to my sets of photographs (complete set of all railing) at the moment, some on steps has been 'repaired' I think. But, the removal of iron railings etc from towns was a national effort and was genuine enough on the part of the people. However some bright boffin in the WD had not done the physics to discover just how cast iron, etc., could be converted into plate or into gunmetal, so all that history was destroyed for no gain and all that effort was in vain. The barges were taken into the centre of the Bay and the material dumped. Long rusted away now, I have no doubt. An ill considered plan, much as we are getting now ....
Says it all really. Great ideas are only great if they are well thought out and they work. A real shame, as when you look at old photos of the town and see the railings in place, there is an elegance to it. Once history is removed or destroyed, that's it, there's no going back and it's gone forever. Let's hope we are not the generation that saw the destruction of Battery Rocks.
