CURNOW FISH AND CHIP SHOP CAUSEWAYHEAD

SAM AND FAMILY; THEY SOLD WET FISH AND FISH AND CHIPS IN THE EVENING I BELIEVE
They were beauts, a feature of old Penzance and so was their shop in Causewayhead. Sam was as broad Cornish as they come. I'm so glad to see his portrait.

He apparently had a coal fired fryer way back in time. I seem to remember the trick was not to get Sam or Stan as some called him to talk too much or move suddenly as the dew drop on the end of his nose would fall into your chips!!! One of his sisters was called Violet I'm working on the other, hang on please

Aha, according to an old friend of mine he was in fact called Stan, Sam was an uncle who wasn't with the business but had a son called Billy. Stan's sisters were Violet (Vi) and May. May had straight, dark hair cut straight along the bottom, had a limp and liked a Guinness or two in the Farmer's. May, was married to a Merchant Navy chap and lived in Bullock Market Terrace. By the photo although they were getting on I would suppose Vi was on the right but could be wrong.

I have a copy of a signed diagram that accompanied the legal document dated the 8th October 1963 in relation to a change of ownership at no. 29 Causewayhead (now Waves cafe-bar). The diagram clearly shows Curnow's fish shop at no. 31, now part of the building occupied by Stratton Creber Estate Agents. I would be interested in knowing whether Curnow's were higher up Causewayhead previously.

I remember them well; we used to be allowed to stay up late 1 night a week on a school day and my sisters used to sent for bags of chips for our supper and we used to listen to "The 3rd Man" on the wireless, while we ate them.
