To be honest - I can read a map fairly well generally, but I have to have reference points; on a mountain when the mist drops, clues and evidence are not easy; I have tried the Garmin but it is so fiddly getting through the menus that I basically reach the point of chucking it away. I carry three scales of map with me on these treks. Most maps that I have seen on SatNav are intended for drivers (not of the golfing variety), I just want a GPS reader.
Thanks ::6:
I have a bluetooth GPS receiver that I do not use anymore that would work with any Pocket PC with Bluetooth. This would be your ideal solution as there is a software app that can use OS maps to display your location.
The beauty of a plasticised paper map is that it spreads out as big as you like, and the whole area can be seen; when you are up in the mountains, the vista is so wide, it is beyond any tiny picture on a laptop down, let alone the effects of sunlight and drizzle. Pocket PC is talking real money, neither do I have a wifi account, which I assume will be required for maps; I know OS maps on file are rather near the normal number of limbs in payment. I once looked into it when considering it for architectural work.
