Janner

This was the steam engine which had been used at Penlee Quarry to pull the stone-trucks to the Newlyn South Pier for loading onto ships there. The picture was taken in 1955 on Sandy Cove the shingle beach between the South Pier and the Quarry. I do not know when this engine was replaced by diesels. It was known locally as Janner after the nickname of the driver.
In 1964 it was in a much better state, as in Keith Farmer s photograph. Is this really 1955?
See Industrial Railway Record Nr 20 pages 269 et seq.
Those pages also include an operational picture of her in 1928 (W A Lucas).
I have written notes about this line and locomotive here on site - The Archway Penlee - 4.

Sometimes as I get older, I seem to remember more and more from my younger days, but can t remember what I did last week. read# read#

It is because every single experience and sense has been stored; the mind spends so much time filing and organising ( a sort of defrag exercise) that as we get older, the synapse route is remembered easier if we allow ourselves to relax, rather than wildly chasing around.

Thanks, Treeve, for your comment. I have looked at Keith Farmer s 1964 photograph and agree that it looks like Janner, but in a much better state. I confirm that I took my photograph of Janner in 1955, so can only assume that either it was restored or that Penlee had more than one Janner !

It is not impossible that the picture in the Record is an older one than noted, or as you say a partially restored version. Thank you.
