I have my ways ;) I have an account of this area already, but it needs investigating. Castellations (or rather more properly crenellations) were quite popular in the early houses of the Elizabethan period, and you are quite right - certainly not intended for the hovering archer in green tights. ::15:
 
Photographs of the Canopy and The Needle pictures 5 and 6. Notes on the history of the entrance on Kenegie - 5. The iron band is a continuous ring it has bolts which indicate that there was something attached to The Needle. The granite does not show any signs of damage. There appear to be indentations which may have been older points of attachment. The base of The Needle appears to be formed of an old gatepost cap.
