I regret that we live in a different world now, where it is all run by demarcation, accountants and the regulation book. Gone are the days when the Borough Engineer simply looked and instructed. Now people die rather than some airy fairy H and S being broken. I feel so very sorry for the family of Alison Hume.

The probable fury and destruction of the sea along this coast of the Bay is best summed up in a report of 1820 when they stated that if the 1817 storm had continued another 2 hours, the power unleashed in that would have burst its way through to Hayle, making Penwith an island. Perhaps a fabulous (original meaning) tale. This coast has been subjected to storms of that magnitude since 650AD, another that swamped lands 1020AD ... There is no magic solution, the present bunch do not even admit (unlike King Knut, who troubled himself to prove his inability to his fawning subjects) that they are well nigh powerless and continue to make all manner of pointless cosmetic expense to appease the peasants. Perhaps our officers and bureaucrats should be tied to their thrones on the seashore.
