spider shedding

this is my spider shedding her old skin
How long does it have the skin for? and what do you do with the old skins?
Just a though... what about taking one to a nightclub and chucking it at a girl ::11:

This is common knowledge ... that spiders shed their skin. They shed over night usually, as they are very prone to predators whilst their inner skin is hardening, before they can move on. Wonderful set of hydraulics.

well I know they shed their skins I was wondering if the time scales was species/breed specific

Most spiders shed, because they have a fixed hydraulic size, five to seven times in their lives. Rather like humans shed to increase size, our human frame re-grows five times or so in its life.

they shed a lot more when they are younger as they are growing a lot faster, to start with she was shedding about once a month, she`s about 10 years old now so only sheds about once or twice a year, she`s a Red Knee and can live for up to 30 years, she doesn`t just shed at night, normally does it in the day, she`ll spin a mat of silk then flip over onto her back and just lie there for an hour or so while she pumps fluid between her old and new skin, the skin then starts to tear around her carapace, the round disc on her back, and she slowly pushes the old skin off, pulling her legs out of the old ones, it normally takes about an hour or so pull out of the old one, she then lies on her back for another hour or so to recover before flipping back over onto her front, at this point she is very soft, even her fangs have shed, it takes about 24 hours for her to dry and harden again

Thank you for that ... interesting to see the difference between wild and captive. What does she eat? Spiders are absolutely incredible creatures. I suppose she does not feel at risk, being in the glass enclosure ... is she sensitive to heat? Does she need warmth?

she eats crickets, moths and locusts, she would eat baby mice and birds too, she has a heated tank, if it was too warm she would try and get away from the heat source and if it was too cold she would become inactive and die, I used to have 9 spiders at one point, all different sorts, some of the climbing spiders would only live for 18 months or so, the red knee is about the longest lived at 30 years, the males are a lot smaller and only live for about 2 or 3 years
