The Regal Cinema

This picture shows the Regal Cinema back in 1963.

This building was originally the Octagon Baptist Chapel. Built in 1803.
George Charles Smith in 1807 became the pastor there. (born 1782 London, Leicester Square). He was known as Bosun Smith.
In 1822 he Converted the building to the Jordan Baptist Chapel
1879 it was Converted to The Central Hall
December 15th 1910 Picturedrome opened in Central Hall
Became The Regal Cinema.
The good old Regal - or commonly referred to as ‘The Fleapit’ or sometimes ‘Boogy’ or ‘Buggy’. There were seats crammed in every available space, including independent pairs installed above the back row of the balcony one in each top corner of the building. These seats were much sought after by those seeking seclusion during the programme. However seclusion came at a price and alas when the theatre lights came up necks would be craned to see who was up there – very embarrassing for some, often with jibes being shouted up from the stalls.

Looks like a Hillman Minx Series V 1951. The poster is of Savoy. Anyone read the name of the film?

Next door down was the First Reading Room, when the chapel was built.[/Q

Don't agree about the car, looks to me like a 1950's Standard 8,the one with non opening boot.

Will someone delete my ruddy comment above which was in answer to the last comment in page one which has long been superseded but I didn't notice till I had written a misplaced comment! I checked the delete option in Edit and then clicked on delete comment then got a message saying I wasn't allowed on that page! What went wrong?

Actually, I was also told I that BB Quotes are not allowed when I tried to quote the comment! Are these functions not ready yet or am I simply finding complications?

Think it's probably a Standard 8, because, as far as I can remember, they were all black. My father had a Standard 10, that was cream. Both 8 & 10 had 3 rear lights - ahead of their time!

there was a sweet shop opposite where you coud get red toffees .if there was a popular film on the queue would stretch into morrab gardens !!!!!
