Did you expect it to look like a DVD? The module in the centre controls the movement of the platter as the film is taken up by the projector. The film is then wound back onto another platter, hence rewinding itself for the next performance. As you can see it would be extremely difficult indeed to just rewind the film a few minutes, albeit a popular request after a technical breakdown!
