Tolcarne Sea Defence

Work progresses on the sea wall at Tolcarne, before the monument to lost fishermen is replaced. I think the base of the statue is made from stones removed from the old stone sea wall, which has recently been exposed. It was built around 1840, and was demolished in the 1880 storm. The shingle beach is now moving and the length of the old wall and quay is showing well enough; I am making a photographic survey, and hope, as time progresses to measure it.
The thing is that the old wall is built of two distinct granites, and in two separate stages. It is my belief that the section next to Tolcarne was a Quay, on to the Lodgia. There are remnants of timber posts which presumably had landing stages on top. I have a lot of work to do in surveying that section.

That 1927 is the only picture that I have seen with anything near an idea of what was there, some posts are squared, others are old trunks. Each one needs to be measured and orientated, and rot assessed.
