Sid Courtenay Shop

This is a photo of my father Sid Courtenay standing outside his first junk shop. The shop was in fact an old cottage which was attached to St Clare Villa in St Clare Street. The site is now occupied by the Fountain Court Flats. The two other shops opposite to this photo were Mr Prouse the flower shop and the shop owned by Bernice Pierce
I remember Sid and the shop, we used to stop and talk with him on the way too and back from Saturday Morning (MINORS) Pictures, firstly at the ABC Cinema in Queen Street, which unfortunately closed, it had an organ that used to come up out of the stage,,,we then used to go to the Savoy Cinema in Causeway Head,,,2/6 pocket money a week, we could go pictures, and get chips on the way home, and still have change to buy a pilchard for bait in the week to go fishing down the harbour and catch pouting off the steps with handlines, those were the days and that was growing up...... So has this been supplied By shaun Courtenay Then, who lived in Heamoor??

My grandmother worked in West Cornwall Hospital in the 1950s and early 1960s. She used to infuriate my mother because on the way from work to the bus stop she would call in the junk shop , (belonging to a Mr Courtenay), and buy something, every day it seemed. Would it have been in these premises or had he moved by then?

A small correction the flower shop opposite my Fathers place was run by Percy Matthews and was called Bowl of Flowers,In answer to Chill My Father had this shop in the early sixties and remained there until the early 70 s when he moved to the cottage that stood where the public toilets are located in Jennings Street before finally locating to the building that is now occupied by Breadline. I think this photo was taken aroond 1968. In reply to Heamoorman you are correct in who supplied the photo
