The Lidden, Newlyn

Thinking of Lidden Road off New Road near Wherrytown, I was confused by this 'Lidden' depicted here though the word has a connection with the sea area off Newlyn called Gwavas Lake. I can't find the name in modern Newlyn and think we are looking at the section of road outside the Red Lion across the water in view of the Chapel visible there. I look to Treeve for clarification (or others).
If you contact Kevin Camidge at this site: http://www.cismas.org.uk He may be of some assistance. He and his colleauges are currently conducting an archaeolgical survey on Mounts Bay, may have some info, worth an email. Tell him Dennis from Oman mentioned him. That will put him off ( NOT!!!) laugh# laugh# laugh#

Thank you very much for that - I have seen the survey vessel running back and forth across the Bay.

Ok, hope he can be of assistance to you, if not, was an Inspector of Works for English Heritage for South Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, before I left or foreign climes in 2003, I have contact names and numbers for the Southwest folks in Bristol. If you need help mail me laugh# laugh# laugh# laugh# laugh# :lol

Thank you - I have been searching for every snippet of record, comment or diary that refers to sea level and weather changes on Cornish shores from 900 onwards. Thanks, too, for your kind offer.

I have to say that in Cornwall s Geology and Scenery by Colin M. Bristow, there is a picture of the submerged forest in Mount s Bay exposed in 1883. Apparently, oak, alder, hazel and birch were identified; a sample of wood from near Long Rock has been carbon-dated to just over 2000 BC.

I have not seen that particular book, but that is the photograph - it all goes to prove that we do not live on a stable planet.

Ah! Now I understand - that the blue print which I didn t notice is a link! I was in a quandry!
