This reasonably accurate sketch of New Street from a doorstep in 1961, when I was a young boy, has been included for comparison with other snaps I have subsequently taken of the street. An artist lady (a Mrs Crighton) passing by as I drew this kindly bought me a small paintbox to encourage me!
This family home of the my family and relations from the 50s to the 80s is now part of the Star Inn. Here my mother is on the doorstep with three of her grandchildren, children of my brother in New Zealand. This was taken in the late 70s.
Note the Telephone exchange on the left and the Star Inn garages and courtyard off to the right. The snap shows L to R: two brothers and me. The Market House is just visible behind us.
My wife in New Street with our first child. Notice the chimney of the New Street Laundry behind. I believe the patch to the right was a bomb site from the 2nd World War.
