This view is from the Abbey Slipway (closed to traffic). It was taken 7th January, 2009 on a very cold day, overlooking the Inner Basin of the Harbour.
A view from the top of Abbey slip down to the new office/cafe development at Abbey Warehouse. Looks like they might be putting steps down to the cafe below.
Built around 1840 on land owned (previously by Richard Oxnam) by The Reverend Thomas Vyvyan; The chapel was used by the Methodist New Connexion Church, then when vacated to new premises, it was taken over by West Cornwall School, until they moved to York House (now Penwith District Council...
This lane was less significant until the Oxnam family moved to the land opposite, and ships drew in the new quay below. The slip was New Street Slip until after 1845, as New Street pre-dates Chapel Street.
Looking across to basin towards Abbey slip. Nothing much has changed here over the years. But look at the sign on the Abbey hotel. It says antiques, and note the advertising on the wall halfway down the slip.
